Good news – HB 228 passes Second Reading

April 2, 2009

The Senate moved HB 228 up to Second Reading today, and passed it by 40-10. See the vote HERE.

It will go to Third Reading tomorrow where I presume it will get a similar vote.

Then it will have to return to the House to see if the House will concur with Senate amendments. If the House does not concur, HB 228 would be forced into a Conference Committee, a committee of both House and Senate members which would try to work out a compromise version that both the House and Senate would accept. The problem is, conference committees can be VERY RISKY.

We (NRA and MSSA) are still trying to finalize our position for the House, but we will probably recommend that the House concur with Senate amendments (even though we morn the loss of “Alaska carry” and are really PO’ed over medical facilities being added to prohibited places). There is still a LOT of meat in HB 228.

Best wishes,
